24 Guides, Young Leaders, Rangers and 8 of their leaders from Jersey descended on London’s Wembley Arena on Saturday 17th October to witness some of music’s top acts perform at Girlguiding UK’s BIG GIG 2009.
Scouting For Girls, The Saturdays, Alexandra Burke, Taio Cruz, Chipmunk, The Noisettes, Alphabeat, JLS and Pixie Lott were the stars on show at this music event, which has been held exclusively for guiding members for the last ten years. Previous events have been held in Manchester’s MEN Arena and Birmingham’s NEC.
The Centenary BIG GIG was also the perfect place to announce the results of year-long community action project Changing the World. The special Centenary project saw nearly 200,000 members raise over £550,000 for 19 partner organisations including Water Aid, Book Aid International and Plan UK.
Nicky Maindonald who organised the trip said ‘All the girls had such a brilliant time in London. It’s fantastic that Girlguiding UK put together such an enjoyable and unique ‘girls-only’ day that’s so relevant to what the girls like and enjoy.’
Lauren, 11, said “It was awesome and fantastic, just amazing, thousands of girls screaming and singing along. Scouting for Girls and JLS were unbelievably excellent.”
And Hannah, 10, said “I thought it was absolutely fab and loved it when Aston took off his top. I danced, sang and screamed. Can’t wait till next year.”
Whilst in London the party from Jersey also visited the science museum and Spitalfields market where they had lunch before returning to Jersey on Sunday evening.
