Whilst the Rainbows and Brownies slept, the Guides set off on an 8 mile hike to St Catherine's, stopping at 2 checkpoints along the way. Their route took them along the roads of St Clement and Grouville before they tackled the final leg of the journey to see the sunrise on a new day. Spirits were high throughout the night, despite the gradual drop in temperature as dawn approached.
After varying amounts of sleep, the Brownies and Rainbows rose around 3.15am on Sunday to prepare themselves for the walk to St Catherine's to join the Guides. After donning their high visibility jackets and glow sticks, they set off with their leaders. Anyone who passed the walkers by car could not fail to notice what an impressive sight they made as they “glowed in the dark”.
Once gathered at St Catherine's, there was a short time to wait until 5.09am when the sun was due to rise and the sunrise ceremony and renewal of promise would take place. Certainly the membership were willing the sun to rise but on a slightly chilly, grey morning this was unfortunately not to be. Nonetheless, this did not deter the Association from continuing with the planned ceremony and all sections were able to renew their promise, lead by the Island Commissioner, Mrs Hilary Hardy.
Breakfast cooked by Deputy Andrew Green and his team of helpers was then served and the Bacon rolls were a welcome sight. Indeed, in some cases, this was in itself a new experience for some of the younger members who had not eaten bacon rolls before but went home to declare to their parents that they were “the best ones they had ever tasted”.
Further challenges were laid on at St Catherine's, blending different parts of the wide range of Guiding and non Guiding activities that units have available to them. A scavenger hunt, a walk to the end of the breakwater, a marching game and keep fit session kept everyone busy until a fleet of coaches arrived to collect everyone for their transfer to Le Rocquier School for the day for the third section of the event.
