More than 500 Islanders including, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Leaders and parents together with former members of Girlguiding gathered in Howard Davis Park on Saturday 5th September 2009 to launch the centenary year of the Girlguiding movement.
The event began at 10 am with the launch of 100 balloons and then the girls showed off their artistic skills by making giant birthday cards.
All of the members including the Trefoils then played a a huge game of pass-the-parcel whilst sat in a figure of 100.
The event also featured the final of the Centenary Star competition which was an
X-Factor style competition to find the most talented member of Girlguiding Jersey.
The three finalists - a dancing group from the 12th Grouville Brownies, singer Julia Calendar and viola player Melanie Marsay all performed in front of a panel of judges with Julia being crowned the winner.
Hilary Hardy the Island Commissioner said “The event was extremely popular and it was a good opportunity for us to be seen out in public and was an excellent way to start the centenary year.
Girlguiding remains very popular in Jersey and the girls who take part learn some very important life skills. “We are modern, relevant to the girls of today and we provide something that is unique - a girl only space”.
