On Sunday 9th October 2011 a short ceremony and reception organised by the current Girlguiding Island President, Mrs Hilary Lambert, took place in the library at Samares Manor, to place on display the original Girlguiding Island Standard, at the invitation of Vincent Obbard.
Past and present guiders were invited and guests included the last 5 Island Commissioners, Jurat Mrs Mazel Le Ruez,MBE, Mrs Dorell Wherry, Mrs Jill Le Quesne, Miss Solange Rebours and Mrs Hilary Hardy.
The current Island Commissioner, Mrs Sonia Machon, paraded the standard, with Mrs Les Quesne and Mrs Wherry as escorts, up the staircase to the library and presented it to Vincent Obbard, whose mother had been a past Girlguiding Island Commissioner and Island President. ‘Guiding was my mothers passion throughout her life from girl to young women, to Island Commissioner right through to President up to her 90th birthday, and the standard symbolised just that and to have it in the room she used as her sitting room couldn’t have been more suitable’
The 8 foot rectangular Island Standard was designed in 1923 by Major Norman Rybot, a local historian and an authority on matters of heraldry, and encompassed a Trefoil Badge representing the 3 fold promise of Guiding and the International nature of the movement, 2 Norman Leopards identical to those on the Royal Standard showing that Jersey was once part of Normandy surrounded by blue and silver signifying the Island in the sea, the motto, Be Prepared, and other Trefoils. Lady Boot, a great supporter of Girlguiding Jersey presented the Standard to the Island Commissioner Mrs Whittaker Maitland in 1924
The Standard was first used for the annual Guiding competitions and held by the units for that year, the first winners being the 3rd (GFS) company at Springfield and later became the Standard of the Island Commissioner, accompanying her in representing Jersey at events in the UK. In 2000 due to the Standard being very heavy and fragile, Miss Solange Rebours, Island Commissioner at the time, commissioned a new standard, and the original one was ‘laid up’ at Guide Headquarters.
Hilary Lambert finished with ‘ My first event as President and very pleased with the good turnout, with Trefoil and Guiders who remember the original standard and pleased with it’s final resting place.’
