Guiding Girls Forward
A New Island Commissioner
Sonia Machon, a local guider from St Peter has been appointed Island Commissioner for Girlguiding Jersey.

When she was 7 years old Sonia started her Guiding life as a member of St Mary’s Brownies, where she progressed to St Mary’s Guides and in 1969 gained the highest accolade for a Girl Guide at that time, the Queens Guide Award.

When asked about her earliest memories of guiding she said  ‘I will always remember camping, especially over the Easter holidays when you didn’t know what the weather was going to be like, sometimes, chilly, rainy or sunny.’

Sonia also had the honour of meeting Lady Baden Powell when she visited Jersey in 1969. “ We were able to go onto the tarmac at the airport then, so we formed a Guard of Honour for her. It was a real privilege to have met her ‘explained Sonia.

Sonia became a leader first at St Mary’s Guides and then at La Moye Guides before leaving to start a family.
She became involved again as a leader at St Peter’s Guides, after meeting Jill Green at an anniversary dinner, who was in need of a first aid trained guider. Sonia remains as a Leader at St Peters Guides.  As well as being a leader and enjoying imparting her knowledge and helping the girls, Sonia has also been West District Commissioner, Camp Adviser and Outdoor Activity Adviser.

Now as Island Commissioner she will represent Jersey in the South West Region and support, help and lead local guiders. Over her 5 year appointment Sonia is looking forward to the 25th anniversary of Rainbows, the Brownie Centenary, Girlguiding Jersey Centenary and Pizazz, a 40th birthday party for SW region.

Having just celebrated 100 years of Girlguiding UK, Sonia says ‘I am looking forward to taking the association forward. Girl Guiding is modern, up to date, relevant and something that girls want to join as it is different but an extra to what they already do. I want them to have fun, and make lifelong friends, just as I have’
